thus, therefore and hence are different

I agree with Lukas; I've read many essays that use 'thus' in the same manner as 'therefore' or 'consequently'. Could somebody please clarify? (For example, "...smoking leads to lung cancer, thus increasing morbidity").

Also, I am a bit confused about the difference between 'thus' and 'thereby'. I feel like both mean 'in this way'.
