“hone in” vs. “home in”

I might point out that spellcheckers will be of no help here. If "hone in" started as a typo, as evath suggests, that would make sense. @campobello's evolutionary comment is pertinent--unless you are a pilot like AnWulf, or military or a ham radio operator, "homing" is probably a foreign concept.
But the ignorance of the young (and sportscasters) should be fought by the knowledgeable and educated, not abdicated to as an evolutionary inevitability.
