Team names — singular or plural
Because the collective noun used to refer to a country/place or representative group which are representing that place; it is a plural noun not singular. For example: you would say that Liverpool "are" going to win the premier league and not: Liverpool "is" going to win the league. We don't refer to a club or team as a singular entity but rather a collective.
