The word 'subconscious' is usually frowned upon in academic settings because it is often unclear if it is talking about the unconscious or the preconscious levels.

In fact Freud separated the subconscious into a preconscious, which contains latent (just below the surface) memories, and a personal unconscious, which contains repressed and forgotten memories.
