When did contacting someone become reaching out?
It is no surprise that this offends British speak. ‘Reach out’ is an emotion-infused phrase, it communicates that there is already a relationship whereas ‘contact’ could be any random person in the phone book. It is interesting that you find this offensive. It doesn’t seem to be a matter of grammar but rather of preference.
